Forest Management

Why manage your land?

Forests comprise roughly one third of the worlds land and are vital to the environment as we know it. Unfortunately due to a lack of management much of this amazing renewable resource is either not healthy or is at risk of catastrophic loss. Fire, insect and disease, flooding and many other natural processes can be greatly exacerbated by a forest that has not been managed. Forest management is often put in a negative light, but there are many healthy ways to protect and manage your forest that can benefit your parcel as well as the ecosystem around you. In recent years we have seen fires increase in size, scope and intensity and as a result watersheds, ecosystems, homes, lives and more trees have been lost. DEI promotes landowners to manage their forest in a healthy and sustainable way. We use professional foresters to determine what best suites the landowner and their land.

How to manage your land

The first step in this process is to determine what kind of forest/s you have. Then we can assess those different forest types to see what opportunities exist for enhancement and what areas are in good condition or are too sensitive to operate in. We can then formulate a plan that best suites your forest. Foresters from DEI use several methods to reestablish healthy ecosystems on a landowners property for instance: harvesting, mastication, hand thinning and or prescribed fire to name a few.

If this is something that interests you DEI’s President Nick Dolecek(professional forester) has written a book on how the landowner can begin to manage their land. This book gives the landowner or land manager a detailed overview of how to create a healthy and productive forest. Below is a link to the book:
